Deeper Magic
Posted on October 6th, 2004, in the evening
I just followed a link from justwatchthesky.com (what a beautiful site!) to narnia.com, which looks like a trailer site for a forthcoming Disney version of The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe (Amazon.co.uk). I'm not sure what to make of that. One part of me is excited at the thought, but so many reservations as well...what if they mess with the story?, will it ruin my imagined Narnia?
Anyway, it's reminded me of my favourite quote from the book, which I shall now share:
"It means," said Aslan, "that though the Witch knew the Deep Magic, there is a magic deeper still which she did not know. Her knowledge goes back only to the dawn of time. But if she could have looked a little further back, into the stillness and the darkness before Time dawned, she would have read there a different incantation. She would have known that when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor's stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backwards."
There are several moments in the Narnia series that make the air feel strangely thin when I read them, and that's defintely one.
