The inactivity on the site for the last two weeks is a reflection of the very opposite in life outside the web. Normal Christmas mayhem, plus I moved from London to Durham yesterday.
I'm reading Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov at the moment. It's demolishing me.
The Elder Zosima is relating from his youth his response to a man who praised his apparently courageous withdrawal from a wrong-headed duel following a revelation of his need for reformation the night before...
And I told him all that had taken place with Afanasy at my quarters and how I had bowed to the earth before him. 'From that you may see for yourself,' I concluded, 'that by the time it came to the duel I already felt easier, for I had begun my progress at home, and once I had embarked upon that road, all that followed later was not only without difficulty, but even joyous and merry.'
It all starts in the heart for me this year.
