Child Sponsorship through Compassion

Posted on March 5th, 2005, in the evening

I got information about sponsoring a child through Compassion the other day. It's £18 a month, they encourage you to commit to sponsorship until the child leaves secondary education. You can write to the child, and have the opportunity to meaningfully influence a life.

It's a surprisingly intimidating thing for someone who has a flexible kind of life... I don't have a family, I work freelance, I lodge, I travel when I can. The forms have sat on my desk for a couple of days, not due to lack of time but rather a recognition that it actually means something to do this.

I'm ever more convinced that flexibility must not mean lack of responsibility. It's no good having ideals and criticising injustice in the world if I have the power to do something but don't. I need to take responsibility for what I can do, and £18 a month I can do, writing letters I can do, and loving and encouraging another human being I can do.

What is this?
