Man, here's a bizarre dilemma (and I don't think it's an April Fool?!). This guy has put up a site saying he'll cook and eat a rabbit he rescued if people don't donate a total of $50,000 by June 30th.
Just about everything disturbs me about this site, but not just from the "how could he do that?" angle. As much as it plainly is in bad taste, it also shows up the hypocrisy of a disgusted response in a number of ways:
- Rabbits are killed much more cruelly and randomly than this every day.
- Lots of pet rabbits are treated awfully by their owners, this one looks very well looked after.
- We are so complacently removed from the slaughter of animals for our food. How many of us could bring ourselves to personally kill the countless chickens, cows, pigs, lambs and, yes, rabbits killed on our behalf for the eating?
- I think it's the fact that the guy is making so much money out of this (he's already made over $20,000) that really galls people.
Ugh. I wish I'd never seen this site. It would be a huge relief if it does turn out to be an April Fool (then we can all go blissfully back to our supermarket chicken dinners and telling the kids to stop torturing the cat).
