Alister McGrath on the challenge of Christ

Alister McGrath's Knowing Christ is an unusually satisfying mix of theology, autobiography and devotion. His theme is from Philippians 3, and he explores various meanings and methods of knowing Christ.

In the introduction to Part One there is the following stirring paragraph on the challenging invitation Christ issues:

To contemplate Christ is to be confronted with a dramatic and arresting combination of a question mark and an exclamation mark. In Christ, God proclaims to us, in tenderness and anger, 'I will love you!' In Christ, God asks of us, in joy and in pain, 'Will you love me as I love you?'
