Ruth preached on 'the Church' this morning and I noticed in preparation that we don't have many songs in our repertoire on that subject. I guess it's fairly reflexive to sing about Church in church, so perhaps that's not a disaster.
I did bring out 'Awake, awake, O Zion' for that purpose, though, and have been reflecting on applying "Zion" language to the Church.
Perhaps the basis for it is Paul's new-covenant assertion that "he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit". But I do think we need to be mindful that our use of Old Testament ideas is not crass, and worship songs do sometimes overstep that line.
