This tends to be a tricky week. All the excitement and energy goes into the first week of the academic year and by the second it can feel a little flat. But the new student tour of churches lasts about three weeks so actually this week is just as important as last week in terms of welcoming new people. I tried to remember that fact as I prepared.
I did have the slightly flat feeling before I led, but I've learned not to pay too much attention. An important part of worshipping and leading worship is shifting our attention from the temporary to the utterly transcendent.
Mark made the excellent point this morning that Christians saying "Jesus is Lord" is not about us making Jesus Lord. The Father has done that! Christians saying "Jesus is Lord" is about acknowledging and ordering our lives in response to that reality. That's what we were doing today.
Even so, it was very encouraging to have an unusually large number of people comment positively about the morning. The temporary things have their place too.
