Spotify
Posted on February 14th, 2009, in the evening
I've been using Spotify for about a week now. It's not an overstatement to say that this piece of software has already transformed the way I experience music.
It's like a cross between last.fm and iTunes, or for the non-techy a cross between an almost unlimited jukebox and a radio station.
You download the Spotify software, set up an account, and then have access to a simply vast catalogue of music totally freely and totally legally. The free account serves 1 minute adverts every five or six songs, but that's the only string attached.
And their catalogue is just huge. There are a few notable omissions (like the Beatles) but they have large selections for most other big names and an impressive depth of more obscure bands and artists.
I've been listening to a lot of Ray Charles, White Lies and Riot on an Empty Street by Kings of Convenience this week. If you have Spotify installed those links will automatically load the artist pages in the software.
Perhaps the thing I'm most amazed about is how much worship music they have available. Everything from Chris Tomlin's latest album Hello Love, through to surely everything Keith Green ever recorded.
If you like music and haven't signed up already, you don't know what you're missing.
