A lively morning. The uni term hasn't quite started yet but we were 180 adults (I counted after the kids had gone out.)
Our sermon series is on Elijah and Elisha this term, which brings some distinctive themes for worship - a more generalised sense of the greatness of God, his salvation, his people, the nations, and the Day of the Lord.
I noticed only as I was getting ready to begin the meeting that we didn't explicitly present the Cross in worship this morning. I normally aim to bring it specifically into focus at least once in every set.
I've been pondering that, and whether it's unhelpful to assume an understanding of the Cross the way we did this morning. I don't want to become box-ticking in my approach to themes for worship (Is there a song that mentions the Cross, however fleetingly? Tick!)
Clearly other themes are also legitimate for Christian worship. But at the same time the Cross is the doorway through which we enter into the universe of meaning that holds all the other themes.
I shall continue to ponder...
More mundanely, the 'Our God is an awesome God'/'I'll stand' medley at the end worked very well.
