I Waited for the Lord (Psalm 40)

Lyrics Chords

Lyrics

I waited for the Lord
He turned and heard my cry
He took me from the pit of my despair
He set me on a rock
He made my way secure
He put a song of worship on my lips

I will trust in you - the everlasting God
And your praise will be my song
For your endless love is strong in my defence
And though my heart may fail, I'll trust in you

Your ways are glorious
Your thoughts are far above
And many are the wonders of your hands
Your word is on my heart
Your truth is my delight
And I will not restrain my song of thanks

Story

A song of trust in God, based on Psalm 40.

I wrote the first verse years ago but couldn't get the chorus to work so it went on the shelf. In 2011 my church was about to start a sermon series on the Psalms so I wrote a new chorus to teach the song. I added the second verse and outro while recording it for my 2014 EP 'Songs of Everlasting Hope'.

The verse lyrics are fairly directly from Psalm 40, while the chorus takes a little more licence to focus on trust in God. The key phrase 'Although my heart may fail' at the end of the chorus is found later in the psalm.

Notes for Worship Leaders

If you drop the outro bridges and soften the style, this works well with a congregation.
